The Story
We sold our £310k house in Scotland and moved onto cruise ships. Not as a holiday. As our home.
It started as a seven-night trial. Could we actually work full-time from a ship? Turns out we could. The WiFi held up, the routine worked, and the cost of living was lower than our life on land. So we kept going.
I work remotely as a CRM marketer. Kevin runs his tech business. We stick to UK working hours no matter what time zone the ship is in. Some mornings that means starting at 5am. Other weeks it means finishing at midnight. You adapt.
Our monthly costs are under $6,000. That covers the cruise fare, WiFi, food, excursions, and the occasional drink package. Compare that to a mortgage, council tax, energy bills, car insurance, petrol, and the daily commute. We're spending less than we were as homeowners.
Our longest sailing so far: 35 nights, Barcelona to Singapore. We've sailed on Royal Caribbean, MSC, Celebrity, and Norwegian. We favour repositioning cruises and transatlantic crossings. Longer sailings, fewer ports, more sea days. That's where you get real work done.
